What to Wear for Your Portait

A common question people have is what to wear to their photo session. Choice of clothing can make a big difference. We want the viewer to look at the person and the pet in the image and not be distracted by the clothing so the first advice is to avoid busy patterns and large logos.

Keep it simple

Blue jeans and sweaters with no pattern make the dog really pop. The lack of patterns, flashy colors or logos keeps the eye on what’s important – the couple and their dog.

Less Skin

People’s eyes are drawn to skin, but we want them to look at your face not your legs or arms so wear long sleeves and long pants.

For family portraits you can all dress alike, in say blue jeans and gray tops, or make sure to have everyone wear either all cool colors (blue, green, purple) or all warm colors (red, orange, yellow).

Coordinate Colors

This couple coordinated their clothing with muted grey and green so that the colors compliment each other.

Consider your dog’s fur color

Think of your clothes as the backdrop to your dog. If your dog is black or a dark brindle, wearing black will make you all blend together, but a gray or light color will make the black dog stand out.

Choose footwear

Don’t forget to wear shoes you like for the shot of your pet at your feet.

Though the above tips are good guidelines, rules are meant to be broken. The most important thing to wear is something comfortable that reflects who you are.
